Professional Experience
Dr. Evan Zimmerman is a native of Edwardsburg and has been providing comprehensive eyecare to his patients of all ages since receiving his degree in 2020. Dr. Zimmerman has experience in general eye and vision care, ocular disease, specialty contact lenses, low vision and binocular vision disorders. Prior to joining Eye Care Associates of Michiana, Dr. Zimmerman practiced in a surgical practice in Michigan and is experienced in surgical co-management and the special eyecare needs of our seniors. Dr. Zimmerman completed multiple clinical rotations as part of his training, including Cherry Health in Grand Rapids, Dorn VA in Columbia, South Carolina, Great Lakes Eye Care and WOW Vision Therapy in St. Joe Michigan, which provided a wide variety of clinical experience.
Volunteerism
Dr. Zimmerman has a heart for community service and involvement. While he attended Hope College, he was on the leadership team organizing a fundraiser for the Holland Free Health Clinic. While living in Cadillac, he was a participant with “Dancing with the Y” (and won first place!) to help raise money for the local YMCA’s children’s programs. In addition to community service, Dr. Zimmerman also volunteers his optometric services wherever possible, providing school vision screening, in-service education on eye care topics to other health care professionals and community organizations. While in optometry school, Dr. Zimmerman was actively involved in VOSH (Voluntary Optometric Services to Humanity) and participated in a mission trip to Dominica to provide free vision services and glasses to less-fortunate individuals without access to basic healthcare needs.
Education
Dr. Zimmerman graduated cum laude from Hope College with a Bachelor of Arts in Biology in 2015. He attended Michigan College of Optometry at Ferris State University (MCO) and received his Doctor of Optometry in 2020 (a special year for optometry!). During his time at MCO, he served on several boards in leadership positions, received the Vision Rehabilitation Student Leadership Award in 2018 and was part of the Beta Sigma Kappa Optometric Honor Society.
Associations/Memberships
Dr. Zimmerman is currently a member of the American Optometric Association and the Indiana Optometric Association. He is looking forward to developing his roots in the Hoosier state.
Personal
Dr. Zimmerman grew up in Niles, Michigan and attended Edwardsburg High School. Evan met his wife, Alyssa, while he attended MCO at Ferris State University. Alyssa is also in the healthcare field as a Dental Hygienist. Dr. Zimmerman and Alyssa love to travel and enjoy new experiences, but their favorite hobbies together are golfing, snowboarding, and listening to live music. They have two fur babies named Finn and Quinn that keep them very busy!
